Stop Start Technology

stop start technology Stop start technology or mild hybridization is probably one of the cheapest and easiest ways for car makers to improve fuel economy and make greener cars.

Imagine walking down a city street where all the cars are stuck in a traffic jam and you breathe in exhaust fumes, air pollution, etc. Now if all those cars had a stop start system the air would be substantially cleaner and the cars themselves would be much more fuel efficient.

Basically a Stop/Start System automatically shuts down and restarts the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) to reduce the amount of time the engine spends idling when the car is not moving. The fuel efficiency gains from using this technology are between 5 and 15%.

For example the Audi A3 2.0 TDI 140ps DPF Manual 6-speed has a mileage rating of 55.4 imp MPG whereas the similar model with stop-start A3 2.0 CR TDI 140PS Stop-Start Manual 6-speed has a mileage rating of 64.2 which is an improvement of 15.9%.

Some of the cars that currently offer this technology are: Audi A3 S-Tronic, BMW 1 Series, Citroën C2 and C3 models, Fiat 500 pur O2, Hyundai i10 & i30 blue, Toyota Yaris Optimal Drive, Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion.

Bosch produces a start/stop system which is used in the Mini Clubman and BMW 1 Series.
