Our aim is to highlight the top fuel efficient new diesel cars, so don't expect to find diesel cars that don't acheive fuel economy better than around 50 MPG. Pictured above is the Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TDI 75PS BlueMotion, this lovely little car emits only 89 g/km CO2, seats 5 and gets around 83.1 (69.2) MPG imp (US).

Diesel cars in the past have been noisy rattlers, spewing out smog but getting good MPG. In the last 10 years that has all changed with most current diesel cars becoming cleaner, smoother and quieter.

As you will see on our top fuel efficient cars page, all cars except the Toyota Prius are diesel cars, so in 2010 diesels lead the world in fuel efficiency. In 2011 that should start to change with both hybrid diesels and electric cars coming to market in mass production numbers, and taking the lead in terms of fuel efficiency.

Currently worldwide the most fuel efficient vehicle available with an old technology combustion engine is the smart fortwo cdi diesel, which uses only 3.3 l/100km or 85.6 (71.3) MPG Imp (US), unfortunately as it's name suggests the smart is only a two seater so doesn't suit everyone but if you are commuting daily with only one person then this could be the car for you.
