Most Fuel Efficient Car
Most Fuel Efficient Car - this isn't always the greenest car, as usually diesels are more fuel efficient than even some hybrids but produce more CO2 emissions. For example in Australia for 2010 the Ford Fiesta Econetic diesel (3.7 litres / 100km) is slightly more fuel efficient than the Toyota Prius (3.9 litres / 100km) but produces 98 grams/km of CO2 compared to the Prius at 89 g/km CO2. Currently worldwide as far as we can tell the most fuel efficient vehicle available is the Nissan LEAF electric car, which uses the equivalent of 2.4 l/100km or 118.9 (99.0) MPG Imp (US). Electric cars are much more fuel efficient than combustion engine cars due to the efficiency of electric motors, so any electric car available should be at the top of the fuel efficiency ladder. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be any clear measure currently to compare electric cars with ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars. Here are the most fuel efficient cars listed by country for 2011: | Country | Make / Model | Seats | Engine Litres | Fuel Type | Vehicle Class | Litres/ 100km | MPG Imp (US) | CO2 g/km | | USA | NISSAN Leaf | 5 | Electric | Battery | Medium | 2.4 | 118.9 (99.0) | n/a | | UK | SMART fortwo cabrio or coupe | 2 | 0.8 | Diesel | Supermini | 3.3 | 85.6 (71.3) | 86 | | Canada | Toyota Prius Hybrid Hatch | 5 | 1.8 | Elec/ Petrol | Medium | 3.9 | 72.4 (60.3) | 89 | | Australia | Ford Fiesta Econetic Hatch | 5 | 1.6 | Diesel | Small car | 3.7 | 76.3 (63.6) | 98 |
We've kept the previous listing for 2010 below so you can see the progression to higher efficiency cars, really the only change is the Nissan LEAF which went on sale late in 2010 in the USA.
There are cars available that can achieve 100 miles per gallon, but so far they are only concept cars or are not in mass production, but manufacturers are moving rapidly towards such a car. The GM Volt which has now been released in 2010 has been given a disappointing 37 MPG figure by the EPA. The US EPA have taken into account the gasoline engine but if Volt drivers only use the electric engine for most journeys the equivalent MPG would be substantially greater. As the Volt is driven solely by electric motors and only requires it's gasoline engine to charge the batteries when they run down on longer trips. If you feel you must have a SUV but want something that has good fuel economy and is a bit kinder to the environment, then check out our most fuel efficient SUV listing.
