EEStor

EEStor - This energy storage system could be the future of electric cars, but is it all hype? We hope not, because if this technology does come to market it has the potential to transform electric cars into the mainstream. The problem currently with battery storage which all electric cars must use is that they are heavy and take up space within the vehicle. For example the Tesla which has one of the best electric car ranges available of 240 plus miles, uses 6,831 lithium-ion battery cells and weights approximately 450kg, taking up valuable space and adding considerable weight to the vehicle.

Who is EE Stor?

They are a company based in Cedar Park, Texas who are developing a new type of energy storage based on capacitors, which they have named EESU (Electrical Energy Storage Unit).

What can EE Stor's EESU do that batteries can't?

Firstly the weight of the EESU is about 25% of lithium-ion battery cells, at around 100kg.

Secondly volume is about 75% of lithium-ion battery cells

Lastly the best bit...., recharging times are an amazing 3 to 6 minutes rather than hours when recharging any other type of battery.

So when is this great technology coming?

Well here comes the bad news, so far there has been very little solid news coming from EE Stor. Currently there is no vehicle on the road using this technology, well not one that has been reported as yet, ZENN Motors who took a $5 million 10.7% stake in EE Stor in 2009 must beleive in the technology but we'll have to wait and see.....
